First-Ever Long Island Housing Symposium Press Conference
Monday April 26, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at 478 Uniondale Ave., Uniondale NY
Rain Date: Tuesday April 27, 2021, 11:00am
Uniondale, Long Island, N.Y., The Uniondale Community Land Trust and
Hempstead Community Land Trust will host the first-ever Long Island Housing Symposium on April 29 virtually. The housing of thousands of Long Islanders has been impacted by the pandemic.
Leading housing organizations from across the Island will come together for the first time to discuss, create and discover ways to work better together to support those whose housing has been impacted by the pandemic. Once the moratorium expires on May 1, thousands of Long Islanders could face eviction or foreclosure. Close to a dozen housing organizations have partnered to work together to develop collective ways to stem the tidal wave of homelessness that could happen once the moratorium expires.
“We are working together as we anticipate an increasing need for housing support, services, and referrals” Nicole Jean Christian, Executive Director of the Uniondale CLT shared. Brandy Watson, Pres/CEO of the Hempstead CLT noted that “our organizations will be the first place many people will turn to when they begin seeking help; getting on the same page now, is critical.”
Symposium partners include: LI Housing Services, Brookhaven NAACP, EMERGE (Empowering Minorities, through education, research and government enterprise), People’s United Bank, Health and Welfare Council of LI, Nassau County Human Rights Commission, Housing Help, Inc., Hofstra University Center for Civic Engagement and Nassau-Suffolk Law Services.
At the Symposium attendees will:
- Discuss the impacts of housing discrimination on Long Island and the work being done to change the legacy left behind;
- Connect with service agencies that are available to support those experiencing housing distress and food insecurity;
- Understand how innovative housing models like the land trust, voucher system, and subsidies are creatively charting a new path to sustainable, affordable housing options.
There will be a plenary session, two workshops, and a report back. RSVP to the press conference by sending your name, email, and phone number to email@example.com.
